What is landscape rock restoration?
Landscape rock restoration means cleaning up an existing decorative rock bed instead of replacing the rock. We pull the weeds, lift the stone, rinse the dirt out of it, put down new weed barrier, set the rock back, level it, and cut a clean edge. It costs less than buying all new rock because you keep the material you already paid for.
Decorative rock is everywhere around The Villages and Central Florida. It uses no water and it looks sharp when it is new. Then a few summers go by. Dust and leaf litter work down into the stone, the fabric underneath tears or wears out, weeds come up through the gaps, and the rock sinks in patches. The bed starts to look neglected even though the rock itself is fine.
Signs your rock beds need work
- Weeds and grass coming up through the rock
- Rock that looks gray or dirty instead of clean
- Thin or bare spots where you can see the soil
- Rock spilling out into the lawn, walkway, or driveway
- Fabric that is torn, or that you can see sticking out
- The bed has lost its shape and the edge has gone soft
How we do it
- Look at the beds and give you a priceWe tell you what is actually wrong and what it will cost. Free.
- Pull the weedsWeeds, grass, and built-up leaf litter come out of the bed first.
- Lift and rinse the rockWhere it is worth doing, we lift the stone and rinse the dirt out of it.
- New weed barrierWe lay fresh heavy-duty fabric, overlapped at the seams and pinned down.
- Set the rock backRock goes back down evenly, thin spots get topped off with matching stone, and we cut the edge back in.
- Clean upWe blow off the drive and walks and haul the debris off.
Why fixing it usually beats replacing it
- It costs less. You are not paying for a truckload of new stone.
- It fixes the actual problem. New rock over old failed fabric goes weedy again.
- The bed holds its shape. Re-leveling and a fresh edge make a bigger visual difference than new rock does.
- Less waste. Good stone stays out of the landfill.
What we cannot promise
No weed barrier stops weeds forever. Fabric blocks weeds coming up from the soil, but seeds also blow in and sprout in the dust that collects on top of the rock. New fabric cuts the weeding way down. It does not end it. Expect to pull a few by hand, or ask us about a pre-emergent treatment when we quote the job.
What to know before you book
- If the rock is badly broken down, or so much soil has washed in that it cannot be separated out, replacing is the better call. We will tell you if that is what we find.
- How long a bed stays clean depends on sun, rain, how much tree litter falls on it, and whether anything gets done to it afterward. We cannot put a number of years on it.
- Matching stone for topping off thin spots is not always an exact match. Older rock fades, so a fresh top-off can read slightly different at first.
- We do not do irrigation repair. If a line is in the way, we work around it and let you know.
